Problematized Bodies: How Our Physical Selves Shape Love, Work, & Identity
Title of Event: Problematized Bodies: How Our Physical Selves Shape Love, Work, & Identity
Description of Event:
No matter what people do, we do it in a body. That includes how we work, play, eat, parent, make love, think, feel, and die.
And so every patient’s body is part of the therapeutic process. Each week, you see patients struggling not just with illness, but with chronic pain, insomnia, limited mobility, loss of function, infertility, food allergies, sexual dysfunction, hidden disabilities, and weight problems. They also struggle with shame and isolation.
Bodily conditions quietly organize patients’ marriages, their parenting, their capacity for pleasure, their very self-image. Your patient with arthritis isn’t just in pain—she’s also exhausted, feeling old, and watching her husband slowly become her caretaker. Your patient with Crohn’s disease has organized his entire social life around bathroom access. These are not peripheral issues; they’re crucial to understanding who these people are and what they need.
This webinar is NOT about trauma or somatic therapies. It’s about developing a clinical lens that sees how physical life is intertwined with psychological life. You’ll leave with practical tools for productive conversations that most patients will gratefully join.
