AASECT Mentorship

Mentorship Program for Licensed & AASECT-Certified Mentors

The Mentorship Program supports members of AASECT, connecting them with information, resources, and other members in the professional fields of sexuality. This includes finding experienced AASECT mentors who will assist members in advancing their education, training, certification opportunities, and career guidance. Mentoring is a voluntary service for AASECT, assisting in the professional development, community building, and career building of newer members, and supporting diverse communities within AASECT. This program supports the shared commitments that help create a safer, meaningful, and growth-oriented mentoring experience.

Purpose

The Mentorship Program supports the professional development of all AASECT members by fostering communities that offer guidance, education, insight, and resources related to sexual health, intimacy work, sexuality education, relational therapy, and clinical growth. The participants collaborate to create goals and encourage professional development to help ensure a productive, meaningful mentoring experience built on trust, curiosity, and professionalism.

Mentoring is a collaborative professional relationship, not psychotherapy, supervision, or clinical oversight, and will always respect the mentee’s professional autonomy.

Program Expectations

Mentors

Mentors shall create an engaging learning environment where all identities, abilities, backgrounds, orientations, and relationship structures are welcomed. Mentors must honor the AASECT vision, follow state licensing and/or certification laws, adhere to AASECT’s Bylaws, and maintain confidentiality within legal limits.

Mentors will support the learning goals of the mentee, offer feedback with compassion and clarity, share appropriate resources, and show up with reliability and integrity. Mentors will maintain appropriate boundaries and communicate any changes in scheduling. Mentors will avoid dual relationships, and to be able to clarify the limits of mentoring vs. supervision.

Mentors will maintain the integrity of the mentoring relationship by communicating openly and addressing concerns promptly. If at any point the relationship no longer supports the mentorship relationship, mentors will approach the conversation with care and transparency. Each mentorship will have at least 4 touch points. If, for some reason, you are unable to continue the mentorship, notify the mentee and the Mentoring Committee.

Mentees

Mentees will participate actively and respectfully, attend sessions, and remain open to feedback and self-reflection. Mentees must honor the AASECT vision, follow state licensing and/or certification laws, adhere to AASECT’s Bylaws, and maintain confidentiality within legal limits.

Mentees will respect the mentor’s boundaries and role, as discussed. Mentors cannot provide emergency clinical interventions, appropriate supervisors must be contacted for urgent issues.
