Introduction to Internal Family Systems (IFS) through the Lens of Sexuality

Title of Event: Introduction to Internal Family Systems (IFS) through the Lens of Sexuality

Description of Event:
Sexuality is a vital yet complex aspect of human life, requiring the harmonious interplay of internal parts, interpersonal dynamics, and biological processes. Both clients and therapists often find themselves navigating sexual challenges with uncertainty, discomfort, avoidance or a lack of direction. Self-Led Sexuality is an integrative approach developed by Patricia Rich which combines principles of positive sexuality with the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model—an evidence-based therapeutic framework created by Dr. Richard Schwartz. IFS offers a non-pathologizing lens for understanding and resolving human struggles, including those related to sexuality.

This 4-day, 20-hour training, the first in a series of courses on Self-Led Sexuality, introduces the foundational concepts and practices of IFS and demonstrates their applicability to a variety of sexual dilemmas and scenarios. This workshop prioritizes the acquisition and refining of IFS skills such as finding and unblending parts, negotiating with protectors, mapping the system, and facilitating Self to Part relationships.

Participants will gain both cognitive understanding and lived experience through didactic content, interactive group discussions, demonstrations, case examples, practice exercises, and feedback. IFS is both simple and sophisticated as a modality, requiring therapists to slow down, look inward, engage with their own parts, and embrace the vulnerability of live practice and coaching. Care is taken throughout this program to cultivate a supportive, inclusive and respectful learning community.

By the end of this training, participants will:
  • Gain a deeper understanding of IFS principles and their application to sexual dilemmas.
  • Develop foundational skills to use IFS techniques with clients and their own internal systems.
  • Build confidence in navigating sexual topics with insight, compassion, ethical clarity and direction.
