Navigating Sexual Desire: Conversations in Therapeutic Practice

Title of Event: Navigating Sexual Desire: Conversations in Therapeutic Practice

Description of Event:
In this engaging training, mental health providers will develop essential competencies, skills, and knowledge to foster open dialogue with their clients about sexual desire, pleasure, intimacy, relationships, and related concerns. The training will address clients who struggle with their desire and sexuality, clients who want to improve communication with their partners about these topics, and clients who wish to connect with themselves and increase their sexual desire.

We’ll delve into the theory behind sexual desire, pleasure, and intimacy to gain insights into the intricate dynamics that shape human connections. There will be a focus on exploring experiences that impact sexual desire, including stressors, triggers, and life transitions. We’ll examine how these factors affect both male and female pleasure. Utilizing the Evidence-Based Extended-PLISSIT model, participants will learn how to create an open, non-judgmental atmosphere to discuss sexual desire with clients. Participants will also explore ways to discuss consent, boundaries, and ethical challenges with their clients, and utilize practical tools and strategies through a trauma-informed lens to address these sensitive topics effectively and create a safe space for clients.

Agenda:
  • Examine boundaries, consents, and ethics-related concerns when discussing sexual health issues with clients.
  • Identify individual and interpersonal factors that impact male and female sexual desire from the bio-psycho-social perspective.
  • Assess via the therapeutic process how clients experience differences in desire.
  • Describe the extended-PLISSIT model to discuss sexuality with clients in therapy.
  • Identify four ways to increase the client’s sexual desire.
