This 90 minute live online workshop translates the Hebrew text of the Song of Songs into actionable clinical tools, moving the sacred text from the sanctuary directly into the therapy room.

Part 1: Textual Translation and Clinical Re-Reading

Participants examine key Hebrew terms often softened by traditional English translations:

Teshuqah: The rare term for desire that appears under domination in Genesis, returning in Song 7:10 as mutual and unruled.

Gan Na'ul: The enclosed garden traditionally equated with virginity, whose Hebrew roots actually describe a self-possessed body that opens only by invitation.

Shalhevetyah: The book's most intense word representing a blazing flame carrying the sole trace of the divine name, which rests not on temple or law, but on erotic love.

Shechorah Ani Ve Navah: A phrase where a single Hebrew conjunction turns black and beautiful into black but comely, embedding a colonial reading into the text.

Part 2: Cultural Somatics and Body-Based Integration

The second half bridges text and somatic experience. Because faith and race formed shame settles deep within the nervous system, theological affirmation alone is insufficient. Drawing on Resmaa Menakem’s cultural somatics and the framework of the Soul Nerve, participants practice:

Body settling techniques and the five anchors.

Distinguishing between clean pain and dirty pain as applied to sexual and spiritual shame.

The session concludes with a guided practice pairing Menakem’s settling sequence with the garden imagery of Song 4:16. This is offered as a foundational tool for clinicians to use for personal regulation before adapting it for clients navigating religious and sexual trauma.
