Talking the Talk: Guiding Parents in Age-Appropriate Conversations About Sexuality with Youth

Title of Event:

Talking the Talk: Guiding Parents in Age-Appropriate Conversations About Sexuality with Youth

Description of Event:

Conversations about sexuality are often challenging for parents, but with the right tools and support, they can become powerful moments of connection, education, and trust-building between caregivers and their children (AAP, 2016; Goldfarb & Lieberman, 2021; Flores & Barroso, 2017). This 1.5-hour continuing education program equips clinicians with the knowledge and practical strategies needed to support parents in fostering open, age-appropriate, and developmentally informed conversations about sexuality with their children and adolescents. Grounded in current research on child and adolescent sexual development, communication theory, and family systems, this training provides a culturally responsive framework for helping parents navigate common concerns, misconceptions, and anxieties. Clinicians will learn how to coach parents using evidence-based tools including the “3 E’s” framework (Education, Empathy, Engagement) to reduce shame, promote healthy identity formation, and build resilience in youth. Through interactive discussion, case vignettes, and clinical examples, participants will leave the session with practical language, strategies, and resources they can immediately apply in their work with caregivers from diverse backgrounds.
