The Embodiment of Consent: Feeling into Yes, No, and Maybe
Title of Event: The Embodiment of Consent: Feeling into Yes, No, and Maybe
Description of Event:
The Embodiment of Consent: Feeling into Yes, No, and Maybe
With Jacks McNamara (they/them)
In this sex-positive somatics workshop for therapists and other practitioners, we’ll explore how to help clients notice where consent lives in their bodies, and offer skills for articulating their needs to others. Through a blend of presentation, guided experiential exercises, and reflective group discussion, we’ll practice cultivating somatic awareness, meeting ourselves with kindness, and supporting clients in identifying what is true in their bodies.
Learning Objectives
• Participants will be able to identify and describe embodied “yes,” “no,” and “maybe” signals in their own bodies as a foundation for guiding clients.
• Participants will practice somatic skills to support clients in tracking consent responses through sensation, breath, and awareness during experiential exercises.
• Participants will learn therapeutic conversation skills to help clients find their own language for their needs around boundaries and consent.
The presentation supports culturally responsive consent by connecting embodied “yes” and “no” to how people may communicate care, boundaries, and interpersonal safety across different cultural and community contexts. It invites participants to consider how factors such as family/community norms, language, relationship to land and place, and historical experiences of power and mistrust can shape what sensations feel safe to notice, how boundaries are expressed, and what consent language sounds like in practice.
