Purity culture, a movement that gained significant prominence in the 1990s within evangelical and conservative Christian communities, centers on strict abstinence before marriage, rigid gender roles, and the moralization of sexual thoughts. For individuals raised within this framework, the messaging goes beyond an encouragement to delay sex; it frequently ties an individual's inherent worth to their sexual "purity" and frames sexual curiosity or exploration as inherently shameful, dangerous, or sinful. For mental health professionals, this presents unique clinical challenges. Clients recovering from purity culture frequently present with high levels of deeply internalized sexual shame, religious trauma, sexual dysfunction (such as vaginismus, erectile dysfunction, or low desire), and intense distress within intimate partnerships.
