When Clients Want to Try Rope: What Therapists and Educators Should Know About Shibari, Consent, and Safety
Title of Event: When Clients Want to Try Rope: What Therapists and Educators Should Know About Shibari, Consent, and Safety
Description of Event:
Shibari and rope bondage are showing up more often in conversations about intimacy, trust, and embodied connection. Yet many therapists, counselors, and sexuality educators have never received formal training in how rope play works or how to discuss it responsibly with clients. This online class offers a practical introduction to rope that emphasizes safety, communication, and harm reduction so professionals can support clients who are curious about exploring rope in a thoughtful and informed way.
Taught by renowned Austin-based rigger Lexa Grace, this training bridges the gap between rope culture and clinical practice. Rather than training attendees to become riggers, the goal is to provide therapists and educators with the foundational knowledge needed to talk about rope play clearly, responsibly, and safely with their clients. The class will also include a demonstration of a simple bedroom tie that professionals can reference when discussing beginner rope exploration.
Participants will learn about the meaning and cultural roots of “rope,” different types of rope materials and rope play styles, and the safety profiles associated with each. The class will explore consent practices specific to rope scenes, focusing on building a clear toolbox of intentional opt-ins that reduce ambiguity in negotiation. Attendees will also learn why rope is considered edge play, the most common risks associated with rope bondage, and harm reduction strategies professionals should understand when clients want to experiment with rope at home.
Risks discussed will include nerve injury, rope burns, panic responses, and other potential hazards. The session will conclude with a demonstration and explanation of a simple beginner bedroom tie designed for lower risk exploration.
This class is designed for sex therapists, counselors, and sexuality educators who want a better understanding of rope bondage in order to support kink-curious clients without needing to develop advanced tying skills themselves.
