Asexuality and the Invention of “Normal”: Across Sex, Gender, & Orientation
Title of Event: Asexuality and the Invention of “Normal”: Across Sex, Gender, & Orientation
Description of Event:
This 6-hour course examines how scientific, medical, and cultural institutions have historically constructed the concept of “normal” through sex, gender, and sexual orientation. Using asexuality as a critical lens, the training traces how professional knowledge came to organize desire, intimacy, and identity around compulsory sexuality. Participants will engage with the historical development of sex classification, gender identity, sexual orientation, and models of desire to understand how cisheteronormative assumptions became embedded in practice. Participants will leave with concrete ways to recognize normative assumptions in clinical and educational settings and apply approaches that better support marginalized experiences.
