Sexual Development Across the Lifespan

Title of Event: Sexual Development Across the Lifespan

Description of Event:
Sex and sexuality are central, and multifaceted, elements of the human experience across the lifespan. Yet clinically it has been marginalized, compartmentalized and its components relegated to specialists within healthcare disciplines. Mental health professionals receive little, if any, specific training on addressing sex during their graduate level training. Yet all counselors and therapists, regardless of the settings or populations they work with, will encounter a wide range of sexually related issues.

Sexuality is an innate aspect of humans across the lifespan. As a result, therapists frequently encounter a variety of sexuality issues in the clients they treat but may not feel well-equipped to address sexual concerns effectively. This 2-hour workshop will address a range of sexuality issues that arise in children, adolescents, adults, and older adults; biological, psychological, and social factors that impact sexual development across the lifespan, as well as an examination of the connection between intersecting identities, sexual values, and behaviors. This workshop will incorporate a lecture-style format, case studies, as well as small and large group discussion. This program is built on a sex-positive framework, using strength-based approaches promoting health and wellbeing. Participants will gain foundational knowledge and explore the emotional skills necessary to conduct clinical work that that maximizes pleasure and celebrates sexual diversity.
