Gender and Sexual Orientation in Therapy

Title of Event: Gender and Sexual Orientation in Therapy

Description of Event:
Sex and sexuality are central, and multifaceted, elements of the human experience across the lifespan. Yet clinically it has been marginalized, compartmentalized and its components relegated to specialists within healthcare disciplines. Mental health professionals receive little, if any, specific training on addressing sex during their graduate level training. Yet all counselors and therapists, regardless of the settings or populations they work with, will encounter a wide range of sexually related issues.

This workshop will equip participants with foundational knowledge and skills necessary for conducting effective work that centers pleasure and celebrates sexual and gender diversity. Workshop participants will explore the complexities of gender construction and sexuality development from a bio-psycho-social perspective and develop the skills necessary to create an affirming and inclusive environment. Through a foundational literature review, case studies, and dynamic group processing, participants will leave this workshop with a new arsenal of resources and practical skills to support them in providing effective and affirming support around gender and sexuality. This program is built on a sex-positive framework, using strength-based approaches promoting health and wellbeing. Participants will gain foundational knowledge and explore the emotional skills necessary to conduct clinical work that that maximizes pleasure and celebrates sexual diversity.
