Expanding the Application of Systemic Sex Therapy with the Global Majority

Title of Event: Expanding the Application of Systemic Sex Therapy with the Global Majority

Description of Event:

This workshop provides clinicians with a comprehensive framework for integrating systemic sex therapy principles within diverse global majority contexts. Participants will explore how systemic oppression, intergenerational narratives, and cultural norms shape sexual identity and wellness. Through the Person of the Therapist (POTT) model, attendees will examine personal biases and develop enhanced cultural humility in clinical practice.

Key topics include cultural foundations and therapist reflexivity, the public vs. private self across cultures, honour and shame dynamics, spirituality and the body, family duty vs. individual desire, and practical clinical applications including culturally adapted assessment tools and intervention strategies. The workshop also addresses the unique experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals within global majority communities, including double minority stress, erasure of queer identity, and navigating conflicts between family loyalty and personal authenticity.

Participants will gain practical skills in culturally attuned psychoeducation, narrative and metaphorical therapeutic approaches, culturally expanded genograms, cultural narrative mapping, affirmative language use, working with interpreters and cultural brokers, and ritual-informed therapy. The workshop will also critically examine existing clinical assessment tools such as the Sexual Satisfaction Index (SSI), identifying their cultural limitations and offering revised, culturally responsive adaptations for both global majority and LGBTQ+ client systems.
