Consensual Non-Monogamy in Therapy: Best Practices for Therapists with Martha Kauppi
Title of Event: Consensual Non-Monogamy in Therapy: Best Practices for Therapists with Martha Kauppi
Description of Event:
This 10-hour course is designed to help therapists become confident and competent working with clients in consensual non-monogamous (CNM) relationships. Whether you’re new to this area or looking to deepen your skills, you’ll gain a solid foundation, therapeutic strategies, and insights into the complexities of CNM.
The course is structured around four in-depth webinars:
1. Polyamory and Consensual Non-Monogamy: The Basics and Beyond
Explore key definitions—including polyamory, open relationships, swinging, and relationship anarchy—while gaining a research-based overview of CNM, including prevalence, mental health outcomes, and relationship satisfaction. You’ll also examine how social norms and marginalization impact CNM clients, especially those with intersecting identities.
2. CNM in the Therapy Room: Case Conceptualization
Learn to conceptualize CNM relationships using key clinical concepts such as informed consent, emotional security, differentiation of self, and mutual benefit. You’ll explore how to support clients in managing complex emotions like jealousy and compersion, and how to help them build and sustain secure, ethical, and fulfilling non-monogamous relationships.
3. Agreement Making and Keeping: Building Security and Reliability
Agreements are foundational in CNM, but many clients struggle to create and maintain them. This webinar offers tools to support honest conversations, effective repair after broken agreements, and differentiation-based trust-building—all essential to healthy CNM dynamics.
4. Differences of Opinion About Opening Up: Working with an Impasse
What happens when partners disagree about opening their relationship? You’ll learn how to work with aspirational goals, consent concerns, and internal/external impasses. This session includes practical techniques like structured conversations and chairwork to help couples move forward without compromising individual values.
Bonuses Include Four Specialized Interview Videos:
• Navigating CNM with LGBTQIA+ Clients with Dr. Reece Malone
• Children in Polyamorous Families with Dr. Elisabeth Sheff
• Supporting CNM Clients Engaged in Kink Dynamics with Stefani Goerlich
• Safer Sex in CNM Relationships with Lilithfoxx
You’ll also receive downloadable worksheets and a curated resource list to support your learning and clinical application.
