Specialized Approaches in Sexuality Counseling with Specific Populations

Title of Event: Specialized Approaches in Sexuality Counseling with Specific Populations

Description of Event:
Understand the necessity and importance of practicing culturally sensitive sexual medicine. Create a welcoming practice for a diverse population, acknowledging that sexual attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs vary across cultures. Honor the client or patient’s (C/P’s) autonomy and build knowledge and skills so that the C/P can make informed decisions. Employ culturally sensitive intake practices, such as being affirming, nonjudgmental, and aware of one’s own cultural biases.

Working with parents of LGBTQ+ minors require sensitivity and the ability to listen to and respect their concerns about their child’s sexual orientation and identity. Explain to family members the risks faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, such as depression and substance abuse, and the importance of familial support and acceptance as a mitigating factor. Help parents identify affirming school and community resources and organizations.
