Skills Training: Disability and Sexuality

Title of Event: Skills Training: Disability and Sexuality

Description of Event:

Disability is not something rare that impacts a few individuals; disability is a normal part of the human experience, and able-bodiedness is only ever a temporary state in a person’s life. In the course, participants will look at the intersection of disability and sexuality, examine and critique our culture’s avoidance of disability, identify the role of shame inherent in ableism, consider overlaps between disability and ageism, and more.

The morning session will begin with a discussion of the disability rights movement and its history in the United States. This conversation will center pain, disability, and death as normal, consider ecology, and explore the impact of this perspective on sexuality. The impact of a lack of sexuality on experiences of disability will also be discussed.

Then, utilizing the work of Alice Wong, Eli Clare, and Mia Mingus, the course will explore intersections between disability and queerness, with a special focus on work, access, and intimacy. Participants will also gain an understanding of Crip Theory as an essential foundation for this conversation.

After lunch, the course will explore how the foundations and learnings from the morning can be integrated into clinical practice, including technology and strategies for consultation, collaboration, and advocacy across systems.

Finally, participants will apply the day’s learnings to several clinical case examples, in both large group and breakout room discussions. All three of the day’s instructors will share perspectives on the cases, as well as address any remaining questions from participants.
