Title of Event: Sexuality Research and Research Methods

Description of Event:

This 1-hour training introduces clinicians to the foundations of sexuality research methods and how to critically evaluate research findings for clinical application. Participants will explore major quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method approaches used in sexuality research, with an emphasis on understanding validity, reliability, bias, and ethical considerations. The course highlights how different methodologies shape findings and equips clinicians with practical tools to interpret research more accurately, apply evidence-based insights, and avoid common misinterpretations. Case examples and real study analyses are used to bridge research concepts with clinical decision-making.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to identify and describe 3 major research methods used in sexuality research, including quantitative and qualitative approaches.
  • Participants will be able to compare the strengths and limitations of different research methods, including issues of validity, reliability, and bias.
  • Participants will be able to interpret and critically evaluate findings from sexuality research studies for clinical application.

Sexuality Counseling (SC) Training: 
SC5. Ethical issues in sexuality counseling.
SC6. Theory and practice of consultation, collaboration and referral.

Sex Therapy (ST) Training: 
ST1. Theory and methods of sex-related psychotherapy, including several different models.
ST3. Theory and methods of approach to intervention in relationship systems experiencing sex and intimacy problems.
ST6. Ethical decision-making and best practice.
