Over at least the past decade, rough sex behaviors have rapidly increased as part of younger adults’ sexual repertoires. For example, about 1 in 3 young adult US women were choked/strangled the last time they had sex and about 10% of college students report having engaged in consensual non-consent (CNC) practices. These shifts have occurred in mainstream sexual culture, often apart from many of the principles and harm reduction practices commonly associated with BDSM and kink communities. Although sexual choking is one of the most prevalent forms of contemporary, mainstream rough sex practices, it’s not the only one. Slapping, smothering, hard spanking, CNC, punching, and other kinds of sex have also become more mainstream in the US and internationally.

In this talk, Dr. Debby Herbenick will share findings from her team’s research on rough sex practices, with a focus on sexual choking/strangulation. These rigorously conducted studies include the recently completed Wave 8 of the National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior, the 2021 National Survey of Sexual Wellbeing, several college campus-representative surveys, meme analysis, as well as neurological research. The presentation will address issues such as prevalence, frequency, communication, consent, short-term and long-term health implications, how to talk with teenagers about these sexuality topics, as well as educational materials that college instructors, sexuality educators, and clinicians may find useful in their work.
