Rights, Risks, and Roulette: The State of Reproductive Justice
Title of Event: Rights, Risks, and Roulette: The State of Reproductive Justice
Description of Event:
Reproductive justice for all is not just about individual choice but about dismantling the systems of oppression that have historically marginalized and harmed Indigenous peoples, Black people, and Women of Color. It requires a holistic approach that includes access to healthcare, bodily autonomy, and the ability to raise children in a supportive environment. Forced sterilization, forced birth, and the ever-growing medicalization of childbirth are very much part of the United States’ history and are arguably more present and more lethal today. Despite spending the most on healthcare compared to all high-income countries, the United States has the highest maternal and infant mortality rate. The overturn of Roe v. Wade only increased the risk of both infant and maternal death, and was a massive blow to reproductive rights. By understanding the deep-seated roots of reproductive oppression, advocating for community-based solutions, and working toward policy reforms, we can work toward creating a more just and equitable society for all. Advocating for Indigenous peoples, Black people, and Women of Color (BIWoC) involves addressing systemic and historical injustices while providing concrete ways to support and uplift their voices (Suarez-Balcazar, 2024; Theobald, 2019).
This presentation will address how to best support and advocate for Indigenous peoples, Black people, and Women of Color by first exploring the history of colonialism and its impact on reproductive autonomy. Audience members will learn how to advocate for safe and accessible healthcare, address mental health as a core component of reproductive justice, expand access to mental health support within reproductive justice, address the stigma around mental health in communities of color, and create safe and supportive spaces for mental health.
