Orientation Attraction & Identity: A Clinical Exploration
Title of Event: Orientation Attraction & Identity: A Clinical Exploration
Description of Event:
Orientation is often treated as a simple, fixed category, yet clients’ lived experiences of attraction, behavior, and identity are far more nuanced. This one-day workshop gives clinicians a deeper understanding of orientation and the ways it shapes clients’ lives, relationships, and mental health. Participants will examine how heteronormativity influences both client experiences and clinical assumptions, explore the coming-out process across the lifespan, and consider the distinctions between behavior and identity that matter in assessment and treatment. The workshop also addresses family building for lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals and couples, an area often overlooked in clinical training. A panel of guest speakers will share their personal experiences, grounding these concepts in real lives and giving participants the opportunity to ask questions directly. Clinicians will leave better prepared to work affirmingly and competently with clients of all orientation experiences.
