According to a new study published in The Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality, young adults know what they are talking about when it comes to casual sex terminology.
A number of different terms are used to describe casual sexual relationships these days, such as Friends with Benefits, Fuck Buddies, Flings, Booty Calls, and No Strings Attached. But what do these different terms mean? In this recent study conducted by Jocelyn Wentland and Elke Reissing from the School of Psychology at the University of Ottawa, it was found that young people are able to differentiate between these various types of casual sexual relationships. 885 study participants completed an online survey and were asked to identify four definitions of casual sexual relationships that corresponded with relationship labels. The definitions for One Night Stand, Booty Call, Fuck Buddy, and Friends with Benefits were identified by 96 percent, 92 percent, 81 percent, and 85 percent of participants, respectively.
This is the first published study to clearly distinguish these casual sexual relationships. As an associated press release points out, while young adults know what they're talking about when it comes to casual sex, the question remains whether or not researchers will be able to keep pace with these changes to relationship lingo.
