Legal Issues Facing Gender and Sexual Minorities
Title of Event: Legal Issues Facing Gender and Sexual Minorities
Description of Event:
Explore legal protections and challenges that affect gender & sexual minorities in this virtual workshop with an expert witness.
It’s not exactly a newsflash to say that laws in the US are not applied equally to all– but how, specifically, does legal and judicial bias affect the lives of sex and gender minorities? Do you know what your SGM clients face every day out in the world– or do you need information and strategies to legally protect yourself and your loved ones?
Join researcher and expert witness specializing in sex and gender diversity, Dr. Eli, for a virtual workshop that dives into the realities of navigating the US legal system for sex and gender minorities. She uses research, literature, and her court room experiences to explain the trends and patterns in SGM population’s legal experiences. In this workshop, you’ll learn:
- Context for the selective law enforcement in the US legal system that depends in part on race, class, gender, and sexual orientation
- Definitions and explanations of the characteristics of SGM populations, exploring their shared experiences of inadequate access to institutional protections and services
- Explanations of the primary legal issues facing SGM folks
- Strategies SGM folks use to manage these legal issues
If you’re a clinician seeking continuing education around the specific needs of SGM clients, this workshop will give you a detailed overview of the legal issues that may be affecting their lives. It is also open to people who are sex or gender minorities themselves and who are interested in learning more about navigating the legal system in their own lives and those of their families, as well as community organizers or other professionals or activists who work with SGM populations and need an understanding of the legal experiences they may face. There will be time at the end of the presentation for Q&A and discussion.
