Title of Event: Introduction to Sex Therapy

Description of Event:

This 3-hour training will review the history and ethical development of sex therapy as a specialty in the world of outpatient mental health. Ethical lenses and theories will be reviewed to help each participant understand what are best practices in supporting client’s who present with problems associated to sexual health, function, identity, and expression. Resources, methodology, and theories of practice will be reviewed as it applies to common presentations, as well as guidance on what support a clinician may need in seeking out certification as a sex therapist or otherwise ensure long-term good client care, including how the therapist plays a role in addressing cultural bias that affects people with minority identities.

Course Objectives:

Learn ethical theories and frameworks as they relate to sex therapy
Identify different modalities of care for common sexual health concerns
Conceptualize an active process for the therapist to help best serve clients with minority identities seeking sex and/or gender-affirming therapy
This course will be offered virtually (synchronous) and will require pre-registration.

Sexuality Counseling (SC) Training:

SC1. Theory and methods of personal/individual counseling.
SC2. Theory and methods of sexuality counseling approaches to specific populations (e.g., youth, older adult, couples, LGBTQ people, people with disabilities, ethnic/ cultural/ faith-based populations).
SC5. Ethical issues in sexuality counseling.

Sex Therapy (ST) Training: 

ST1. Theory and methods of sex-related psychotherapy, including several different models.
ST2. Techniques of sex-related assessment and diagnosis of the Psychosexual Disorders described in the current edition of the DSM.
ST3. Theory and methods of approach to intervention in relationship systems experiencing sex and intimacy problems.
ST4. Theory and method of approach to medical intervention in the evaluation and treatment of psychosexual disorders.
ST6. Ethical decision-making and best practice.
