An Introduction to ADHD, Autism, Neurodivergent Affirming Care, and Burnout Prevention.

Title of Event: An Introduction to ADHD, Autism, Neurodivergent Affirming Care, and Burnout Prevention.
 
Description of Event:
The AASECT core knowledge and skills areas for this training are: ethics and ethical behavior, theory and methods of personal/individual counseling, and theory and methods of different approaches to intervention in relationship systems.
 
In Chapter 1,
 
1. We will identify three basic terms related to neurodivergence and neurodivergent affirming care.  
2. We will review ADHD and Autism through a deficit medical model lens.
3. We will review ADHD and Autism through a strength-based, differences versus deficits model.  
4. We will discuss the importance of a strength-based model within the context of rejection sensitivity experienced by neurodivergent folks.
5. We will critique theory of mind by reviewing the double empathy problem.
 
In Chapter 2,
1. We will identify one di fference that neurodivergent folks experience in relation to sensory processing,
2. Cognitive processing,
3. Emotional/relational or social/communication experience, and
4. Executive functioning,
5. Apply the Minority Stress Model to demonstrate how neurodivergent folks experience distal and proximal stressors unique to being a member of a marginalized group.
 
In Chapter 3, 
1.  We will discuss and compare neurotypical burnout from neurodivergent burnout.
2. We will apply Ne ffʼs Boom or Bust Cycle, Pacing Systems, + Spoon Theory to explain neurodivergent burnout and recovery.
3. We will review the impacts of masking stress.
4. We will apply the Job Demands-Resources Theory to conceptualize burnout
severity, recovery, and prevention.
5. We will list organizational, therapy, and personal resources to formulate
burnout recovery and prevention.
 
In Chapter 4, 
 
1. We will discuss sensory overload and management.
2. We will apply Dunnʼs Framework to explain sensory processing di fferences.
3. We will distinguish when monotropism is helpful versus unhelpful and discuss affirming supports.
4. We will discuss how to strengthen interoceptive awareness.
5. We will discuss how to set expectations and negotiate roles and responsibilities related to dynamic shi its in executive functioning capacity.
