Intimacy matters and Sex Therapy with South Asian Couples

Title of Event: Intimacy Matters and Sex Therapy with South Asian Couples

Description of Event:
Being prepared to support intimacy and sexuality issues within South Asian couples requires a nuanced understanding of cultural, familial, and systemic influences that shape relational dynamics. This workshop will provide clinicians with essential knowledge and practical interventions to effectively support South Asian couples in Couples therapy.

Participants will become familiar with the intersection of cultural expectations, religious influences, intergenerational patterns, arranged relationships and societal taboos that impact discussions of intimacy and sex within South Asian relationships. Through case examples and interactive discussions, participants will gain deeper insight into common challenges such as shame, communication barriers, gender roles, and the impact of diaspora experiences. Participants will also explore Person of the Therapist considerations when working with this population.

Participants will leave with culturally attuned strategies to foster open dialogue, enhance emotional and physical intimacy, and address sexual concerns the support the identity of cultural norms of South Asian people. This workshop is ideal for therapists, counselors, and mental health professionals seeking to deepen their competence in working with South Asian couples through an inclusive and affirming therapeutic lens.
