Exploring Self-of-the-Therapist in Infidelity Cases: How Our Biases Shape Treatment Approaches
Title of Event: Exploring Self-of-the-Therapist in Infidelity Cases: How Our Biases Shape Treatment Approaches
Description of Event:
Infidelity is one of the most challenging couples’ problems for clinicians to treat. This pervasive issue touches us both professionally and personally as therapists; therefore, we bring our own personal beliefs and reactions into the therapeutic dynamic. To do the work around infidelity ethically, we must understand how our "selves" potentially influence critical components of treatment that lead to successful therapy outcomes. This workshop brings awareness to our biases around issues of monogamy, infidelity, and mononormativity and how they impact our therapeutic decision-making when it comes to building alliances within our couple system. The workshop also compares the theoretical tenets of three couples treatment modalities - Gottman, Emotionally-Focused Therapy, and Internal Family Systems - and explores the impact of biases on the choosing and implementing of various treatment and intervention modalities.
