Embodied Homework for Sexual Partners

Title of Event: Embodied Homework for Sexual Partners

Description of Event:
When we experience sexual trauma, the imprint of fear gets layered around our healthy sexuality. We remain on high alert and respond in sexual and nonsexual situations as if the violation is still happening, effectively under a ‘spell’ that we are sometimes unaware of. The treatment is both cognitive and physiological. This class will explore what is involved in trauma and how working somatically can ‘break the trauma spell.’ Discussed will be the short and long-term effects of trauma, ways people can manage flashbacks and triggers, and self-care tools for therapists, educators, clinicians, and those we work with.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify obstacles and common narratives that disrupt couples of varying orientations and identities.
  • Practice using techniques in embodiment, mindfulness and play for working with couples.
  • Collaborate on creating exercises to help partners co-regulate, increase connection and intimacy, and improve sexual compatibility.
