Do you dream of starting your own private practice? A virtual conversation exploring ethics, identity, personal values, and money in self-employment
Title of Event: Do you dream of starting your own private practice? A virtual conversation exploring ethics, identity, personal values, and money in self-employment
Description of Event:
Many mental health providers may come to a point in their careers when they consider working for themselves, but where is the road map? Most of us have spent years honing our clinical skills but may have no idea how to start or run a business! This training offers a supportive community space for people who are interested in exploring the freedom and creativity that private practice can offer, while thinking through how larger issues of ethics, identity, personal values and money intersect for self-employed providers. This learning space will provide concrete insights and awareness into both the challenges and opportunities inherent in starting a private practice, but our focus is not a “how-to” checklist. Come learn from a panel of 4 queer, self-employed therapists who have spent years creating and innovating their unique practices in the fields of social work, art therapy, and sex therapy.
Begin to dream into what your future practice might look like, while considering complex and nuanced questions such as:
- What services am I excited to offer? What creative possibilities can I imagine for myself? What does it feel like to become the inspired, confident leader of my own professional life?
- What does it look like to create a financially thriving practice in a capitalist healthcare system that is built around exploitation and scarcity? How can I build a practice that is aligned with my values but also pays my bills?
- Should I work within the insurance system or not? How can I create access for clients if I don’t take insurance? What is equity pricing and what does it look like in practice? How do I determine my rates?
- How will my self-employment be shaped by my unique identity experiences, including things like being a parent, being neurodivergent, or working in a community I also belong to and participate in? What resources will I need to support me?
- How will I challenge imposter syndrome or insecurity as I advertise my services and promote my offerings? How will it feel to articulate my rates, policies, and other business-related boundaries to clients when my income depends on their continued consistent engagement?
- What is it like to provide my own health insurance, sick leave, vacation time, and general safety net? How can I be a good boss to myself?
This training space is meant to be a collaborative and co-created conversation. If you have curiosities or questions you’d like this panel to explore, please email Roxie.Ehlert@proton.me to share your questions ahead of time!
