This presentation offers an overview of a broad range of topics relevant to asexuality including asexual and aromantic spectrum micro labels, different Ace stances on sex positivity and non-sexual attraction, and common misconceptions that alienate the Ace community. The session will begin with a history of asexuality, findings of related research, and consideration of intersectionality and diversity/inclusion concerns are also discussed.
Following this introduction, clinical implications and strategies for working with asexual clients are explored including differential diagnosis between Asexuality and PTSD, sexual interest/arousal disorder, and avoidant attachment style (APA, 2022; Prause, et.al., 2007; Bogaert, 2015); the use of Split Attraction Model for asexual and sexual relationships (Antonsen, et.al., 2020; Brown, 2022; Chen, 2020; Lund, et.al., 2016); and strategies for when one or more partners is asexual (Brown, 2022; Chen, 2020).
