“Talking about Sex in Psychotherapy: Why it Matters, How and When to do it”

Title of Event: “Talking about Sex in Psychotherapy: Why it Matters, How and When to do it”

Description of Event: Sex is a central part of the human experience, yet it remains one of the most elusive topics in psychotherapy. This workshop explores why talking about sex is not just important, but often essential to deep, effective therapeutic work. When approached thoughtfully, discussions about sexuality can strengthen the therapeutic alliance, reinforce boundaries, and invite access to core aspects of a patient's inner world, including identity, intimacy, shame, desire, and relational dynamics.

We will examine how conversations about sex can help move therapy forward when patients are stuck, evasive, or when deeper psychological material is trying to emerge. The workshop will also offer practical guidance on how to initiate and navigate these conversations—whether during an initial evaluation or as part of ongoing psychotherapy.

Through detailed clinical case discussions and open dialogue, participants will learn to recognize opportunities to bring sexuality into the room in ways that are clinically meaningful and ethically sound. Questions, discussion, and reflection on participants’ own clinical experiences will be welcomed throughout the presentation.
