TL Text

Americans’ opposition to abortion softens when TV’s Romper Room hostess, Sherri Finkbine, and her husband Robert (already parents of four young children) travel to Sweden to terminate a pregnancy affected by thalidomide, a drug with known severe risks to fetuses – and for which US abortion law does not provide an exception for at the time. Later that year, a Gallup poll will demonstrate that more than half of Americans feel she and her husband did the right thing.
