Patrick Carnes publishes 'The Sexual Addiction' (Gronemann, 2000, 176). In Minneapolis, he founds the first inpatient program for sex addicts in 1985 — Golden Valley Health Center’s Sexual Dependency Unit. Soon the Diagnostic Statistical Manual includes a diagnosis for sex addiction. For some, kinky and violent sex play becomes “proof” of addiction. In his 1983 book, 'Out of the Shadows', Patrick Carnes named exhibitionism, public sex in restrooms, sex abuse of children, and sex with sex workers as forms of sex addictions.
