AASECT Requirements for Sexuality Counselor Supervisor Certification

AASECT Certified Sexuality Counselor Supervisor® Application

The American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT) has established the following requirements for Sexuality Counselor Supervisor Certification.

1. Membership in AASECT

The applicant will hold Professional, Retired, or Emeritus/Emerita/Emeritix Membership in AASECT. AASECT Sexuality Counselor Supervisor Certification requires ongoing AASECT Sexuality Counselor Certification.

2. Experience as an AASECT Certified Sexuality Counselor

The applicant will have been an AASECT Certified Sexuality Counselor® for a minimum of two (2) years before beginning the process of training to become a certified supervisor.

3. Experience as a Sexuality Counselor Supervisor

The applicant will have completed a minimum of thirty (30) hours of "supervision of supervision" of sexuality counselors from an AASECT Certified Sexuality Counselor Supervisor or AASECT Certified Sex Therapist Supervisor. Supervisors-in-Training (SITs) must work with a minimum of two (2) supervisees prior to certification.

The SIT's supervision process with their supervisor must occur in new fewer than twelve (12) months.

4. Summary of Selected Supervision Experience

The applicant will submit a written summary of two - four (2-4) pages of the applicant's supervision of at least one sexuality counselor supervisee, including the applicant's supervision orientation, the utilization of concepts deemed appropriate to the specific case, as well as one (1) or two (2) examples of an intervention which allowed for change in the supervisee. The summary should focus on the supervisory process.

5. Endorsements

The applicant will include a written endorsement form and letter of recommendation from their supervisor.

The applicant will also include written endorsement forms and letters of recommendation from two (2) professional colleagues other than their AASECT Certified Sexuality Counselor Supervisor who are able to evaluate the applicant's fitness for designation as an AASECT Certified Sexuality Counselor Supervisor. This evaluation is to include assessment of the applicant's knowledge of the general field of human sexuality and specifically providing sexuality counseling; skill as a counselor in general and specifically as a sexuality counselor; capacity for serving in the role of a supervisor; general ability to assume responsibilities; and ethical professional behavior.

The application is submitted through Jotform. The applicant will be contacted for the payment of the $300 USD application fee (non-refundable) after submission of the application.

          a. Supervisor's Certification (and licensure if applicable)
          b. Endorsement Form
          c. Letter of Recommendation
5. Professional Colleague 1 Endorsement Form and Letter of Recommendation
6. Professional Colleague 2 Endorsement Form and Letter of Recommendation
