AASECT Requirements for Sexuality Counselor Supervisor Certification
Beginning January 1, 2015, the candidate for designation as an AASECT Certified Sexuality Counselor Supervisor is expected to meet the following requirements:
I. Membership in AASECT
The applicant will hold Professional, Retired, or Life Membership in AASECT. Ongoing AASECT Sexuality Counselor Supervisor Certification requires ongoing AASECT Sexuality Counselor Certification.
II. Experience as an AASECT Certified Sexuality Counselor
The applicant will have been an AASECT Certified Sexuality Counselor with at least two (2) years of professional experience as a sexuality counselor. A certified professional must be AASECT certified at least two (2) years before beginning the process of training to become a certified supervisor. Note: In January 2023, the required length of time as a Certified Sexuality Counselor was reduced from three (3) years to two (2) years.
III. Experience as a Sexuality Counselor Supervisor
The applicant will have completed a minimum of thirty (30) hours of “supervision of supervision” of sexuality counselors from an AASECT Certified Sexuality Counselor Supervisor or AASECT Certified Sex Therapist Supervisor. Contracts for supervision, individual or group, must be completed and approved by AASECT before supervision starts. As noted in the supervision contract, the contract may be terminated by either party with thirty (30) days’ notice for any reason. Supervisors-in-training must work with a minimum of 2 supervisees prior to certification.
The supervision process must occur between twelve (12) to eighteen (18) months duration, but no less than twelve (12) months.
IV. Summary of Selected Supervision Experience
The applicant will submit a written summary of two – four pages of the applicant's supervision of at least one sexuality counselor supervisee, including the applicant's supervision orientation, the utilization of concepts deemed appropriate to the specific case, as well as one or two examples of an intervention which allowed for change in the supervisee. The summary should focus on the supervisory process.
V. Endorsements
The applicant will include written endorsements from two (2) professional colleagues other than his/her AASECT Certified Sexuality Counselor Supervisor, who are able to evaluate the applicant's fitness for designation as an AASECT Certified Sexuality Counselor Supervisor. This evaluation is to include assessment of the applicant's knowledge of the general field of human sexuality and specifically providing sexuality counseling; skill as a counselor in general and specifically as a sexuality counselor; capacity for serving in the role of a supervisor; general ability to assume responsibilities; and ethical professional behavior.
VI. Application & Approval Process
In addition to the appropriate certification application fee ($300), which is non-refundable, the applicant will submit one (1) copy, in English, of the application.
NOTE: AASECT Supervisor status pertains solely to the supervision process of those seeking AASECT Certification status as a Sexuality Educator, Sexuality Counselor, or Sex Therapist Supervisor. AASECT does not condone or encourage anyone to provide supervision that is beyond the scope or jurisdiction of their professional credentials. Each person provides supervision is responsible for knowing the limitations of their professional credentials.
