AASECT Certified Sex Therapist Supervisor® Application [1]
The American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT) has established the following requirements for Sex Therapist Supervisor Certification.
The applicant will hold Professional, Retired, or Emeritus/Emerita/Emeritix Membership in AASECT. AASECT Sex Therapist Supervisor Certification requires ongoing AASECT Sex Therapist Certification.
The applicant is requied to hold a regulatory license, valid in the state or jurisdiction in which they practice, in one of the following discliples: psychology, medicine, nursing, social work, or marriage and family therapy. Applications from outside of the United States must document equivalent certification.
The applicant will have been an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist® for a minimum of two (2) years before beginning the process of training to become a certified supervisor.
The applicant will have completed a minimum of thirty (30) hours of supervision from an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist Supervisor.
No more than 50% of the hours may be group supervision. Please note: Supervisors-in-training (SITs) may not lead group supervision alone. Additionally, SITs may not supervisor other SITs. SITs must work with a minimum of two (2) supervisees prior to certification.
The SIT's supervision process with their supervisor must occur in no fewer than twelve (12) months.
The SIT's AASECT Certified Sex Therapist Supervisor takes full responsibility for monitoring both the number of supervisees that the SIT can have at any one time, as well as the number of hours of supervision that the SIT is providing while under supervision toward AASECT Sex Therapist Supervisor Certification.
The applicant will submit a written summary of their supervision of at least one (1) of their supervisees, including the candidate's therapeutic orientation and the utilization of concepts deemed appropriate to the specific case. The summary shold focus on the supervisory process.
The applicant will include a written endorsement form and letter of recommendation from their supervisor.
The applicant will also include written endorsement forms and letters of recommendation from two (2) professional colleagues other than their AASECT Certified Sex Therapist Supervisor who are able to evaluate the candidate's fitness for designation as an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist Supervisor. This evaluation is to include assessment of the candidate's knowledge of the general field of sexuality and specifically sex therapy; skill as a therapist in general and specifically as a sex therapist; capacity for serving in the role of a supervisor; general ability to assume responsibilities; and ethical professional behavior.
The application is submitted through Jotform. The applicant will be contacted for the payment of the $300 USD application fee (non-refundable) after submission of the application.
