Description:

When we experience sexual trauma, the imprint of fear gets layered around our healthy sexuality. We remain on high alert and respond in sexual and nonsexual situations as if the violation is still happening, effectively under a ‘spell’ that we are sometimes unaware of. The treatment is both cognitive and physiological. This class will explore what is involved in trauma and how working somatically can ‘break the trauma spell.’ Discussed will be the short and long-term effects of trauma, ways people can manage flashbacks and triggers, and self-care tools for therapists, educators, and those we work with.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe a variety of ways people experience trauma.
  • Identify early and later symptoms of trauma.
  • Name at least 2 ways that sexual violations occur.
  • Describe self-care tools for therapists and educators both during and after sessions with clients.
  • Name at least 2 ways people can manage flashbacks/triggers in sexual situations.
  • Identify tools to use during a sexual experience when a partner is having a trauma response.
  • Understand common somatic practices for treating trauma.
