National Teacher Preparation Standards on Sexuality Education Aim To Improve Training for Educators [1]

A group of sex educators across the country have developed and released [2] a set of educational standards titled the National Teacher Preparation Standards on Sexuality Education. These standards were created to provide guidance to institutions of higher education in order to better prepare undergraduate physical and health education teachers to deliver sexuality education in school settings. It is these educators' aim that a greater number of physical and health education teachers will be better prepared to provide sexuality education that is developmentally, culturally, and age appropriate.

At this point in time, only 61 percent of colleges and universities require sexuality education courses for health education certification, and nearly one-third of teachers responsible for sexuality education report receiving no pre-service or in-service training in this area.

The development of the National Teacher Preparation Standards is part of the ongoing Future of Sex Education Initiative, a national project to improve sex education and reproductive health of the nation’s youth. The initiative is led by Advocates for Youth [3], Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States [4], and Answer [5].

You can read more about the development of these standards at both the Journal of School Health [6] and the Future of Sex Education [7] website.
