Critical Consciousness & Sex Positivity: Implications for race salient relationships and sexuality

Title: Critical Consciousness & Sex Positivity: Implications for race salient relationships and sexuality

This workshop will review emerging research that examines the reactions to and experiences of relationships and sexual encounters for which differences in race were addressed and made explicit. Of particular interest is how participants' reports of sexual comfort and racial worldview influenced their approval or objections to such dynamics. Results based on survey and interview data will highlight the often nuanced, but also definitive positions of a diverse group of individuals.

Objectives:
1) Identify important subgroups of sex positive community members and their responses to race salient relationships
2) Explain the three components of racial worldview

Dr. James Brooks earned his PhD in the Counseling Psychology program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is currently an assistant professor at Indiana University - Bloomington where his research programs center a critical exploration of race in relationships and sex and sexuality.
