AASECT is excited to announce that five (5) scholarships are available this year to help offset the cost of attending the 2017 Annual Conference: The Bill T. Jones Scholarship, The John Sughrue, Jr., MD, Scholarship and three (3) AASECT Creating Community Scholarships.

 

AASECT Creating Community Scholarship

AASECT is excited to announce three (3) scholarship opportunities available for the 49th Annual Conference through the Creating Community Scholarship Fund! The fund was created to aid in overcoming obstacles that may prohibit those from attending the annual conference. Because of the generosity of our members and supporters, we are excited to offer these two scholarship opportunities for this year's conference.

The three scholarship recipients will each receive full conference registration to AASECT’s 49th Annual Conference, which will be taking place June 15 – 18, 2017 and three nights’ accommodations at the conference hotel – the Green Valley Ranch Resort, Spa & Casino in Las Vegas, NV.

The scholarship is open to graduate students and new sexuality professionals who demonstrate a need for the scholarship in one or more of the following ways:

  1. Financial difficulties in accessing AASECT's Annual Conference.
  2. Reside in an area where there is limited or no support for/presence of sexuality educators, counselors or therapists.
  3. Reside in an area where there is limited to no support for/representation of racial, ethnic or diversely identified sexuality educators, counselors or therapists.

Those interested in applying must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current member of AASECT in good standing.
  • Have a prerequisite degree (minimum Bachelor’s level) for pursuing a career in the field of human sexuality,sexuality education, sexuality counseling, sex therapy, sex research, sexology or sexual health.
  • Demonstrate commitment to pursuing a career in the field of human sexuality, sexuality education, sexuality counseling, sex therapy, sex research or sexual health.
  • Provide two letters of recommendation documenting one’s commitment to the field of human sexuality, sexuality education, sexuality counseling, sex therapy, sex research or sexual health.
  • Provide an essay (600 words or less) demonstrating the need for scholarship based on the criteria above and how this scholarship award would help in accomplishing one’s personal career goals.

To apply for the Creating Community Scholarship: Please submit all of the above criteria in one PDF file to conference@aasect.org. Incomplete or piecemeal applications will not be accepted.

Please note - If interested applicants have already registered for the conference, they may still apply. If selected to receive the scholarship, the cost of registration will be refunded, and hotel reservations will be paid at the time of the conference.

The deadline for applications for the Creating Community Scholarship is March 15, 2017.

 

The Bill T. Jones Scholarship 

Bill T. Jones is an internationally acclaimed dancer, director, writer, and choreographer. His work has collided with, and challenged gender roles, violence, love, war, illness, HIV, survival, strength, sexuality, and eroticism. We honor Bill’s fierce passion by funding a scholarship in his name, to encourage and nurture diversity within AASECT.

This $500 scholarship will be awarded once per year, as funds are available, to a qualified applicant as a credit toward the registration cost of AASECT’s Annual Conference.

Those interested in applying to the Bill T. Jones Scholarship Fund must meet the following criteria: 

  • Be a person of color.
  • Have a prerequisite degree (minimum Bachelor’s level) for pursuing a career in the field of human sexuality, sexuality education, sexuality counseling, sex therapy, sex research, sexology, or sexual health.
  • Demonstrate commitment to pursuing a career in the field of human sexuality, sexuality education, sexuality counseling, sex therapy, sex research, or sexual health.
  • Provide two letters of recommendation documenting this person’s commitment to the field of human sexuality, sexuality education, sexuality counseling, sex therapy, sex research, or sexual health.
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Essay/personal statement addressing how this scholarship award might help in accomplishing one’s personal career goals.

John Sughrue, Jr., MD Scholarship

Joan Sughrue, MEd, BSN, RN, DST, CSTS, in memory of her beloved husband, John Sughrue, Jr., MD, DST, is offering a $1000 scholarship to a medical or nursing student to receive sexuality education and training by attending the AASECT 2017 Annual Conference. The scholarship is open to both US and international students.

John became an AASECT member in the late 1970s. He was certified as a Sex Therapist in 1983 and awarded Diplomate of Sex Therapy status in 2003. John loved attending and learning at AASECT conferences and felt that physicians and nurses should be adequately trained in the sexuality field.

To apply for the John Sughrue, Jr., MD Scholarship: Please send your current curriculum vitae and a letter of application stating your interest in the sexuality field and how you plan to incorporate sexuality education and counseling in your medical or nursing practice. Please submit all parts of your application in one PDF file to conference@aasect.org.  Incomplete or piecemeal applications will not be accepted.
