UNAIDS Reports an AIDS-Free Generation Is a Mere 15 Years Away [1]
The Join United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) recently released a report suggesting that the AIDS epidemic would be fully eradicated by the year 2030. According to Medical News Today [2], this new report shows, among other things, that between 2000 and 2014:
- new HIV infections dropped from 3.1 million to 2 million, a reduction of 35 percent
- 15 million people now have access to antiretroviral therapy
- 83 countries that account for 83 percent of all people living with HIV/AIDS have now halted and reversed the epidemics
- the price of medicines for HIV has decreased by 99 percent, to around $100 per person per year for first-line formulations.
While there is still much work to be done, UNAIDS is overwhelmingly optimistic about our chances of eradicating the threat of AIDS entirely. You can read more here [2].
