The World Health Organisation recently released a report [2] detailing the extent to which sexual orientation and gender expression/gender identity are pathologized in The International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. The authors of the report conclude that such reporting practices should be revised, and make suggestions as to how to go forward with said revisions.

It's interesting to note that, in 1973, homosexuality was struck from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. And in the most recent edition of the DSM, what was previously labeled "gender identity disorder" is now labeled "gender dysphoria." In addition, "conversion therapy" has been debunked. The practice is now illegal in California and restricted to adults in New Jersey. Still, despite the 1990 removal of homosexuality as a mental illness from The International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, its pathologization continues.
