AMA Says Changing Sex on Birth Certificates Should Not Require Surgery [1]
The American Medical Association (AMA) recently issued a news release calling for the modernization of birth certificate policies. According to this release, they haveĀ adopted a new policy supporting the elimination of any government requirement that an individual must have undergone surgery in order to change the sex indicated on a birth certificate. This is in opposition to various state laws already existing across the country, stating that one can only change the gender on their birth certificate if they undergo a surgical procedure, then providing a court order stating that this procedure took place.
The AMA also aims to ensure that transgender patients always receive appropriate medical care, regardless of the gender on their birth certificate.
