AASECT - Certification Renewal Requiremen

Certification Renewal Policies

1.       The 20 CEs that are required for certification renewal must be completed by the expiration date of the member's original certification.

2.       If a certified member wants to put their certification on hold, the member should contact the AASECT office in writing indicating the date on which the hold begins, the reason for the hold, and the length of the hold. Certification hold requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The hold cannot be longer than 3 years and the member must maintain active membership with AASECT while the certification is on hold. When the member wishes to reinstate the certification, the member should contact the AASECT office to activate the certification. No member may identify him/herself as a certified professional while the certification is on hold.

3.       All certified members will be sent a courtesy notice 12 months in advance of their certification period ending.

4.       If a certified member does not send in a renewal application and fee by the deadline, the member will be notified in writing that the certification has expired.

5.       Certified members who let their certification lapse for more than three months, and wish to renew their certification will not need to submit a new application, but will need to submit the following: a letter of explanation; the appropriate renewal fee; a copy of the expired certification; the 20 CEs everyone has to earn for renewal of certification; and four additional CEs for each year or portion of a year the certification has lapsed (i.e., 5 month lapse = 4 CEs, 19 month lapse = 8 CEs, 26 month lapse = 12 CEs, etc). For certified members who allow their certification to lapse for less than three months and then renew, the next renewal date will be the original date of renewal and will NOT match the “late” date of renewal. Example: Original renewal date was May 1 but lapsed/actual renewal was July 1; the next renewal date will continue to be MAY 1 and NOT move to July 1. For certified members who allow their certification to lapse beyond three months, the next renewal date will be the day on which approval of the above requirements is granted.

6.       The AASECT office will perform random audits of certification renewal applications. Every 10th renewal application that is received will be flagged for audit and the applicant will be asked to supply copies of all CE certificates that are listed in the application. The application and CE certificate copies will be reviewed by the chair of the appropriate certification committee.
